Julian holds a first class honours degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Limerick where his academic performance earned him a place on the Advanced Scholars program. He is now pursuing an M.Sc. in Computer Science as part of the Human Connectedness group at Media Lab Europe, where he has been awarded the AIB Fellowship. His current work is primarily focused on Ambient Media, and Ad-Hoc Networks.
Before joining the lab Julian worked as a senior software engineer for a number of start-ups. He co-authored the first Voice Portal in Europe, and designed systems for Compaq, Dell, Lucent, Boston Scientific, Prudential, Tellabs, Xerox, and a host of other blue-chip companies. While at university he led a team of developers to produce a number of speech-enabled applications that are today advertised on television across Europe. He built his first commercial system aged 17, a computer dating service with thousands of users for an Irish company he helped found.
He enjoys spicy food, strong liquor, and foreign women - but can't handle any of them.
