Denis O'Brien founded Esat Telecom Group plc. in 1991 and up until recently was Chairman and CEO of the NASDAQ listed, fixed and mobile telecoms company. Esat was sold to British Telecom plc. in April 2000.
He is Chairman of Communicorp Group, a non-executive Director of the Bank of Ireland, a member of the technical advisory Board of 360 Networks and a number of other companies. Over the last number of years he has been developing his interests in property, aircraft leasing, radio, venture capital and new telecoms ventures in Holland, Italy and the Caribbean.
Mr. O'Brien was appointed Chairman of the Games Organizing Committee for the 2003 Special Olympics World Games, by An Taoiseach. The Games will be held in Ireland in June 2003.
Formerly, he was Vice President - Satellite Development in GPA Group (now AirFi) and served as Personal Assistant to the Group's founder and Chairman. Dr. Tony Ryan. He holds a BA degree from University College Dublin and an MBA from Boston College.
