After studying electrical engineering, electronics and IT (degree in information technology), in 1972 he became a Sales Division Engineer for Hewlett Packard in Böblingen. While at Hewlett Packard, he took up various managerial positions in the US and Germany, including Application Systems Manager and Marketing Manager for Germany, until he became Marketing Manager for Europe at Hewlett Packard's headquarters in Geneva in 1987. In 1989, he was made Sales Manager Europe for Computer Systems and a member of the European Management Team. Between 1973 and 1989, Rudi Lamprecht successfully completed the Executive Management courses at MIT in Boston, INSEAD in France and Stanford University. In 1993, Lamprecht moved to Tektronix International in Munich as President, European Operations.

In 1996, he came to Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG (SNI) as Manager, Europe Region, and joined the board in early 1998. When SNI was reintegrated into Siemens AG, he became President of the Private Communication Systems Group in mid-1998 and, in the autumn of the same year, of its successor Group, ICP. Since April 2000, he has been President of the newly-created Information and Communication Mobile (ICM) Group, covering mobile radio networks, mobile telephones, cordless and corded telephones and other communication devices.

Since October 1999, Rudi Lamprecht has also been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Fujitsu Siemens Computers BV. The company, created from the joint venture between Siemens Computer Systems and Fujitsu Computers Europe Ltd., covers the entire IT product range, from PCs and notebooks through servers to mainframes.

In addition to his function as President of ICM, on April 26, 2000, Rudi Lamprecht was appointed as a member of the Board of Management of Siemens AG.
